This Woman COULD live on bread alone....

This is the first in a MANY part series... the end of which I have yet to write. A request was made for me to "spell out" my bizarro-"When Harry Met Sally--on the side" type food preferences. I'm starting with one category and working my way through them all...

In the bakery...I live for bread. I love all kinds. Sourdough might be a favorite... but I like almost any kind. When I was young the very best treat was to wake up to mom's overnight buns baking. To have a fresh from the oven homemade bun dripping with butter was heaven. My mouth waters to think of it. I grew up eating homemade bread too (and this was when "the breadmaker" was my mom and her own two hands). I actually preferred store-bought sliced white bread as a kid, but now I'm strictly whole wheat or multigrain at home. I love croissants, cinnamon rolls, and caramel rolls... Everything else that is typical bakery fare, I can easily do without. I don't like the maple frosting or anything jelly-filled. When it comes to donuts I prefer the plain glazed Krispy Kreme or even a plain cake donut hole to a typical cake donut. People tend to go gaga for muffins too. I don't hate them but I am not a big fan.

I don't like cupcakes or cake at all. Apparently, this is a big deal. The term freakish has been used to describe me in this regard. The two things I detest about cake: the frosting and the cake part. So, I guess I hate the whole thing. When this varies is when it's a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Or when the frosting is a whipped cream based frosting, and even then it can't be very much of it. I hate butter cream or sugary frostings (like the kind on wedding cakes) If I had my choice I would have angel food cake and strawberries or raspberries and whipped cream.

The very best cake I've ever had was an angel food cake with a creme de menthe whipped topping frosting that almost had a bit of a hard meringue shell on top of the whipped goodness... it even had a middle layer. I dream about this cake. I encountered it just once sometime around 1990 at my friend's house... her elderly neighbor lady had made it for their family as a neighborly gesture. If I'm to have a cake like substance I think the smaller the layers of cake the better, and there should be some kind of good, maybe hot fudge based chocolate frosting between them. Almost like a torte. Those, I like. Actually, I do also like (in small doses) the Pepperidge Farms Coconut Cake found in the freezer aisle of the supermarket. My mom also makes these things called chocolate chip cupcakes that are unfrosted and have a sort of cream cheese chocolate chip filling. But even then, I would often eat the top half of them and toss the rest that was more "cupcake"... a bit like the Seinfeld episode on "muffin tops."

UPDATE:
After reading Spencer's "list" I realized I should add that I LOVE cornbread muffins and I hate corn chips. HATE them. Ugh. The smell is not good. Also, I like scones. They remind me of Ireland and the winding road from Blarney to Kilarney.

You "HATE" Fritos Brand Chili Cheese Flavored Corn Chips?

What a sad, sad day, in the mid-Fall month now preceding May, for that august company, by name, Frito-Lay!
